Embassy Rejects Criticism

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy on Wednesday downplayed Russian Foreign Ministry criticism that stringent American visa procedures had inconvenienced Russian officials.

An embassy spokesman, David Monk, said "We are aware of one case which they brought to our attention, and which we believed had already been resolved to everyone's satisfaction."

On Tuesday, a Foreign Ministry spokesman complained that official Russian representatives were asked to provide proof that they did not intend to remain in the United States.

"In this connection the Russian Foreign Ministry drew the attention of the U.S. Embassy to the impossibility of such practices," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Grigory Karasin. "In our opinion, the current visa practices do not match the new character of relations between Russia and the USA."
