Egypt Hangs Extremist

CAIRO () -- A Moslem extremist convicted of plotting to overthrow the government was executed Wednesday, and 18 suspected militants accused of killing a German tourist and two Egyptians went on trial in a military court.


Ahmed Mahmoud Mohammed Gomaa was put to death by hanging in a prison in Alexandria. He was sentenced to death Sept. 20 by a military court. His plea for clemency was rejected Tuesday.


The 18 suspected militants were being tried in connection with a fatal attack on a crowded street in the Red sea resort of Hurgada on Sept. 27.
