Doctor Out on Bail

HARARE, Zimbabwe () -- A white Zimbabwean doctor ordered jailed for six months with hard labor for the deaths of two black patients was freed Friday after one day, rekindling a racial controversy over the case.

Anaesthetist Richard Gladwell McGown, 58, was granted bail by Chief Justice Antony Gubbay late Thursday, pending his appeal to the supreme court against his conviction. He could not be released immediately and so spent the night in jail.

The case arose when a parliamentary committee alleged that McGown had killed the patients while illegally experimenting with morphine.
