Dini to Seek Key Vote

ROME () -- Italy's new prime minister, Lamberto Dini, will go to parliament next week for a knife-edge confidence vote that will decide whether his government stands or falls, parliamentary officials said Friday.

Dini unveiled an emergency government of academics, lawyers and bankers from outside parliament Tuesday to replace Silvio Berlusconi's Freedom Alliance coalition, but his hopes of a smooth ride through parliament have been dimmed by threats from Berlusconi and his right-wing allies to vote against the new team unless they get guarantees that general elections will be held in June.
