Dahmer, who confessed to murdering 17 young men and boys and cannibalizing some of them, was pronounced dead on the way to a hospital with massive head injuries, corrections department spokesman Joe Scislowicz said.
Dahmer, 34, was cleaning a recreation area at the Columbia Correctional Institute when he was attacked. Another inmate was also attacked.
Dahmer was convicted in all but one of the killings and was serving 16 consecutive life sentences.
