Cuban Refugees Revolt

PANAMA CITY () -- Almost 200 U.S. soldiers were injured, some seriously, during violent protests by 1,000 Cuban refugees who escaped from a Panamanian camp, according to U.S. military officials.

The soldiers were hurt when they tried to quell a revolt by the stone-throwing Cubans, officials said. At least 17 refugees were injured in the melee, a U.S. Embassy spokesman said.

The Cubans, most of whom were later captured, attacked U.S. soldiers in protest against the slow pace of transfers from the camps to the United States and other countries.
