Crude Steel Falls

Crude steel production in industrialized countries fell by 1.6 percent to 28.9 million tons in February compared with the same period in 1993, the International Iron and Steel Institute said Tuesday.


Total production in Eastern Europe fell 26.5 percent in February to 7.6 million tons with the Commonwealth of Independent States suffering the most, the figures showed.


Japan registered the highest fall, 7.8 percent to 7.2 million tons, whereas production in the European Union rose by 2.8 percent to 10.7 million tons.


In the United States production decreased 1.1 percent to 6.8 million tons in the same month.


The institute said that total production for the first two months of 1994 in the 67 countries covered worldwide was 109.3 million tons, down 3.6 percent from the same period in 1993.
