Crimea's Tsekov Resign

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine ) -- The chairman of parliament in Ukraine's pro-Russian Crimean peninsula said Wednesday he was resigning, provoking fresh instability in the autonomous region's government.

Sergei Tsekov told deputies of the Crimean parliament that he was stepping down after a week of turmoil over proposals to change the make-up of parliament's leadership. The parliament refused to accept Tsekov's resignation.

Tsekov has effectively become the most powerful man in Crimea's hierarchy since parliament stripped the region's president, Yury Meshkov, of most of his powers in September.
