Cricketer of the Year

NOTTINGHAM, England -- England captain Mike Atherton was named as his country's player of the year, and then pledged to score more test hundreds in the coming 12 months. Atherton emerged from the recent series in the West Indies with 510 runs at an average of 56.44 to follow his 553 runs at 46.08 in last season's Ashes tests. "In the past I have missed out a few test hundreds and I must improve my ratio," he said. "I would like to think I can have an even better year in terms of runs." Atherton won the vote from a panel of judges including England's current team manager Keith Fletcher and their former wicketkeeper Bob Taylor.
