Cowboys, Pittsburgh Secure Playoff Berths

NEW YORK -- Now that qualifying for the playoffs is out of the way, the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers can think about something bigger: home field in their conferences.

The Cowboys, seeking to become the first team with three straight Super Bowl titles, clinched the NFC East with a 31-19 victory at Philadelphia.

Emmitt Smith rushed for two touchdowns and Darren Woodson returned an interception 94 yards for a touchdown to lead the Super Bowl champions to victory Sunday.

The Cowboys raised their record to a league-best 11-2, while the reeling Eagles (7-6) lost their fourth in a row.

Steelers 38, Bengals 15. Pittsburgh (10-3) secured at least a wild-card berth in the AFC and took the Central Division lead by routing Cincinnati 38-15. Jim Kelly threw four touchdown passes, including a 72-yarder to Don Beebe. Andre Reed scored on receptions of 21 and 83 yards, and completed the first pass attempt of his 10-year career to set up another touchdown.

Bam Morris rushed for 108 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Rod Woodson returned one of Pittsburgh's two interceptions for a TD.

The Steelers have won five straight for the first time since 1983, and moved one game in front of Cleveland, which lost to the New York Giants 16-13.

Bills 42, Dolphins 31. In Miami, Jim Kelly kept Buffalo's dream of reaching a fifth straight Super Bowl very much alive with three second-half touchdown passes as the Bills beat the Dolphins 42-31 in a critical AFC East showdown. The Dolphins (8-5) had a chance to virtually lock up the division title, but now stand just one game ahead of Buffalo and New England.

49ers 50, Falcons 14. In San Francisco, Steve Young threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more as the 49ers crushed the Atlanta Falcons 50-14 for their eighth straight victory as they kept pace with Dallas in the race for home field advantage in the playoffs.

Cowboys 31, Eagles 19. In Philadelphia, Peete did well in place of Aikman (sprained knee), completing 10 of 17 passes for 172 yards. Michael Irvin had 117 yards and a touchdown on four receptions in the Cowboys' 14th successive NFC East victory.

Giants 16, Browns 13. At Cleveland, the Giants (6-7) won their third straight following a seven-game slide that came after three straight victories as Brad Daluiso kicked a 33-yard field goal with 19 seconds to go.

Broncos 20, Chiefs 17. At Kansas City, with John Elway sidelined with possible cartilage damage in his knee, Jason Elam kicked a winning 34-yard field goal for Denver (7-6), which suddenly is tied for second place in the AFC West after an 0-4 start. Steve Bono played for the Chiefs in place of Joe Montana, out with a foot injury.

Lions 34, Packers 31. The host Lions (7-6) moved ahead of the Packers (6-7) in the NFC Central thanks to Barry Sanders who rushed 20 times for 188 yards and one touchdown.

Cardinals 30, Oilers 12. At Houston, Buddy Ryan returned to where he was defensive coordinator last year and saw his offense pick apart the Oilers (1-12), losers of nine in a row. Arizona (6-7), while the defense forced six turnovers.

Colts 31, Seahawks 19. At Seattle, the tragedy-stricken Seahawks (5-8) couldn't stop Marshall Faulk, who went over 1,000 yards rushing for the season with 129 yards.

Patriots 24, Jets 13. The host Patriots (7-6) won their fourth straight and moved ahead of the Jets (6-7) in the playoff race as Ricky Reynolds scored on an 11-yard interception return.

Buccaneers 26, Redskins 21. At Tampa, the Bucs (4-9) won their second straight, with Craig Erickson scoring on a quarterback sneak with 32 seconds left.

Saints 31, Rams 15. In his return to Anaheim Stadium after leaving the Rams as a free agent, Jim Everett led the Saints (4-9) to a 21-point halftime lead. Mario Bates scored three touchdowns.
