Coup Trial to Resume

MOSCOW -- The trial of Valentin Varenikov, one of the leaders of the failed 1991 coup against Mikhail Gorbachev, will resume in Russia's Military Supreme Court on June 21, Interfax reported Friday. Varennikov, the former commander of Soviet ground forces, was the only defendant of the coup trial who refused to sign an amnesty last February, under which the charges against the other 11 were dropped. Interfax reported that Gorbachev and Boris Gromov, currently deputy defense minister, would be summoned to testifify.
