Coup Leader Passes the Blame

One of the leaders of the 1991 coup said Monday he was using his own trial to take former Communist Party leader Mikhail Gorbachev to task for breaking up the Soviet Union.

General Valentin Varennikov, the only one of 12 plotters to reject a parliament amnesty and stand trial, said at a press conference that he had demanded criminal proceedings against "those who are guilty of destroying the Soviet Union." Until such a trial is held, Varennikov said, his own would serve that purpose.
