BRASILIA, Brazil () -- A divided Supreme Court cleared former president Fernando Collor de Mello of the corruption charges that forced him to resign in 1992 after nationwide protests. The eight-judge panel ruled 5-3 that there was not enough evidence to convict Collor of being part of a scheme that netted up to $100 million in kickbacks for awarding public works projects.
The former president did not attend the trial, which began last Wednesday. Despite his acquittal, Collor is still banned from holding office.
Attorney General Aristides Junquiera, who led the prosecution, called the court's ruling a step backward for social justice in Brazil.
