Coal Strike Threatened For March 1

Russia's main coal miners' union said miners resumed work Thursday after a one-day national strike over salary arrears but would launch an indefinite strike on March 1 if their demands were not met.

"Coal mines are working as usual today," Itar-Tass quoted Rosugleprofsoyuz chairman Vitaly Budko as saying.

"If the government fails to meet miners' demands, we will stage an indefinite strike starting on March 1," Budko said. Between 500,000 and 600,000 workers at 210 mines took part in a warning strike Wednesday. The stoppage affected virtually all Russia's coal-producing regions.

Officials at the Rosugol coal producing group were quoted by Itar-Tass as saying that the strike cost 387,000 tons of lost production.
