Coal Mines to Close

MOSCOW -- Russia's main coal producer, Rosugol, plans to shut several unprofitable coal mines by the end of 1995, but the project could be postponed because of cash shortages, a spokesman for the company said Friday. "We do intend to close the most unprofitable mines as soon as possible. But to do this, we need money," the Rosugol spokesman said by telephone. Costs incurred in closing a mine include social support for miners, retraining and help in finding new jobs.
