WASHINGTON -- President Bill Clinton set out on an eight-day European trip Wednesday, commemorating World War II by urging Americans to remember the heroes of D-Day. "We can honor their legacy by carrying it on," he said. Dwarfed by a monument to one of the nation's greatest infantry units, Clinton said: "Let us all, from the president to every other citizen, do our best to say a simple thank you -- thank you for what you did." Clinton, who was born two years after D-Day and avoided military service during his generation's war in Vietnam, said World War II soldiers "have given us 50 years of freedom and strong nationhood."
