Clashes Claim 45 Lives

KABUL () -- At least 45 people were killed and 150 wounded in heavy fighting in Kabul on Friday between forces loyal to Afghan


President Burhanuddin Rabbani and his opponents, hospital doctors said.


Artillery and rocket exchanges and aerial bombing began southwest of Kabul just after dawn and then spread to parts of the capital, lasting some four hours, witnesses said.


The number of casualties was among the highest in a single day in Kabul since the present round of fighting started Jan. 1.
