Church Gets Big Book

MOSCOW () -- President Boris Yeltsin announced his support of Patriarch Alexy II's proposal to publish a 24-volume Orthodox encyclopedia for the 2,000 anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ, Interfax reported Friday.


The presidential press service said the encyclopedia, which will cover a wide range of religious and secular topics, will be funded by the Orthodox Church, Russian government funds, and donations.


The encyclopedia will be published in volumes of 800 pages each, with the first volume targeted for publication by 1998. The entire project should be completed by 2010, the press service said.
