Chirac Enters Race

PARIS () -- Gaullist Paris Mayor Jacques Chirac declared his candidacy for president Friday, in a move that intensifies a struggle on France's right wing in the electoral race.

Chirac, an effective campaigner, has increasingly dueled with his fellow Gaullist, Prime Minister Edouard Balladur, whose lead in the polls has suffered from scandals in the Cabinet and unemployment rates that remain high less than six months from the election.

Chirac is nevertheless still less popular than Balladur and Socialist European Commission President Jacques Delors, who are neck-and-neck in opinion polls.
