Chinese Rebels Jailed

BEIJING () -- Nine Chinese dissidents were sentenced Friday to jail terms of up to 20 years for taking part in underground pro-democracy and labor groups.

The sentences mark some of the harshest punishments for anti-government crimes issued in recent years.

Robin Munro of Human Rights Watch/Asia called the sentences "appallingly severe."

"They were all entirely peaceful dissidents dedicated to working within the law," Munro said. He said the severity of the sentences clearly shows the government's determination to stamp out dissent. Bruton Honors Pledge
