Chinese Jet Hijacked

TAIPEI () -- A Chinese airliner carrying 63 people was hijacked by a man wielding a firebomb Friday and ordered to fly to Taiwan, but it abruptly returned to China after the hijacker was overpowered, the Taiwanese government reported.

Taiwan's state radio said the hijacker was arrested when the Russian-built YAK-42 belonging to China's Tongyong Airlines returned to the coastal city of Xiamen. The radio said the plane, with 52 passengers and 11 crew, had taken off from Xiamen bound for the eastern city of Nanjing when it was hijacked.

A military official said the hijacking was apparently foiled by flight attendants but gave no other details.
