Chinese Curb Smoking

SHANGHAI () -- In China's toughest move to date against smoking, Shanghai banned cigarettes in almost all public places starting Thursday.

The country's largest city has plastered "No Smoking" signs everywhere from cinemas to department stores. Not even karaoke lounges are exempt from the ban, which carries fines, -- massive by Chinese standards -- of up to 2,000 yuan ($265). Under the new rules, the public are empowered to order smokers to extinguish their cigarettes in banned areas and can demand that management enforce the regulations.
