China Closes Reactor

HONG KONG ) -- China's largest nuclear power plant is to shut down for up to six weeks after control rods in a reactor failed a test, a senior technician said Monday.

The Daya Bay plant in south China became fully operational only 11 months ago after technical delays andan earlier shutdown in August because of a coolant leakage. The latest shutdown starts Tuesday.

The problem concerns the rods that control one of the reactors. The rods control the speed of the nuclear reaction and are a vital safety component.
