Chile's Economy Surges

SANTIAGO, Chile () -- The Chilean economy grew by 8.2 to 8.3 percent in 1995, compared to 4.7 percent the previous year, Finance Minister Eduardo Aninat said Thursday.

Inflation during 1995, a year described by Aninat as one of the best for the nation's economy in three decades, dropped to around 8.1 percent from 8.9 percent in 1994.

Goals set by the government for 1996 include 6 percent GNP growth and a similar inflation rate.

Foreign trade also boomed, with exports expected to surpass the $16 billion mark, a 38 percent increase from a year earlier.
