Chernomyrdin Leaves for Holidays

Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin visited President Boris Yeltsin on Wednesday to discuss economic reform before taking a fortnight's vacation, a government spokesman said. Chernomyrdin, who was due to leave Moscow for the Black Sea resort of Sochi later in the day, might tour parts of southern Russia while in the region, he said. The spokesman also said Chernomyrdin could interrupt his holidays to visit Georgia. Earlier this month Yeltsin signed a string of decrees, aimed at tightening state control over the Russian economy. Yeltsin has indicated he interfered in the government's handling of the economy because little had been done in practice to handle indebtedness, bank-ruptcies and tax evasion.
