Chechen Bridge Hit

MOSCOW () -- Opposition forces blew up a strategic bridge in Chechnya on Thursday, leaving the entire northern section of the breakaway republic under opposition control, Itar-Tass and Interfax reported.

The bridge across the Terek River, one of the few possible routes for transporting military equipment to and from the Chechen capital of Grozny, was destroyed in Thursday's attack. It had been partially damaged in another explosion on Sept. 13.

The opposition had captured the bridge twice in the past six weeks, Itar-Tass reported. But in both instances, troops loyal to Chechen President Dzhokhar Dudayev ousted the rebel forces and reclaimed the bridge.
