Businessman Freed

NUORO, Italy -- A Sardinian gang suddenly freed a businessman-captive after 10 months, and he headed home, declaring, "I am well." Police, who reported his release, had no immediate details of any deal struck with the captors by Giuseppe Vinci's family, who runs a chain of supermarkets on the island.

Vinci, taken hostage Dec. 9, 1994, while driving home from one of his family's stores in Oristano, was the group's longest-held victim. He was set free in the country, then took a bus to Tortoli, where he presented himself to police.
