No reformist faction nominated candidates for the election in the Bryansk region of southern Russia, 700 kilometers southwest of Moscow.
The People's Unity bloc, a union of Communist Party and local Patriotic Bryansk movement members, won seven of nine seats in the local Duma. Two seats went to independents.
Although Zhirinovsky's Liberal Democratic Party ran an active campaign,and Zhirinovsky visited the region to support his candidates, the party received few votes.
