Boat Will Not Be Raised

STOCKHOLM () -- Swedish Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson said Thursday his government had decided not to salvage the ferry Estonia, which sank in the Baltic Sea in September, killing more than 900 people.

Carlsson said the spot where the ship sank on Sept. 28, 50 kilometers off southwest Finland, would be treated as a burial ground, and that the sunken ferry would be covered over.

Carlsson said it was technically possible to salvage the vessel, but there were considerable risks. He said the gruesome nature of trying to recover hundreds of bodies that have been in the sea for several months could cause severe psychological distress for the workers involved.
