Black Sea Food Fight

KIEV () -- Black Sea Fleet security officers fired shots into the air to drive off Ukrainian sailors they said were trying to seize a food depot on the Crimean Peninsula, fleet officials said Tuesday.

Ukrainian naval officials quickly denied any attempted armed seizure, Interfax reported. The officials said the sailors were trying to deliver supplies to the depot. Russia and Ukraine are negotiating how to divide the Soviet Union's prestigious fleet and it remains under their joint control.

Fleet spokesman Andrei Krylov said Ukrainian sailors armed with wooden clubs and steel pipes seized the depot early Monday evening.
