MINSK () -- U.S. officials pledged Friday to increase aid to finance disarmament in Belarus and said the former Soviet republic's efforts at economic reform could prompt more assistance.
James Collins, U.S. envoy to former Soviet republics, said the United States was grateful to Belarus for its leading role in divesting former Soviet republics of nuclear arms.
"We understand this is a painful and expensive process and are ready to continue financial support for Belarus," he said.
U.S. Assistant Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said the United States and Belarus would imminently sign a new agreement for $5 million in aid for destroying conventional weapons.
