Baltic Arms Ban Lifted

President Bill Clinton has lifted a Cold War-era ban on the sale of arms and military supplies to the Baltics and three Balkan states, the White House announced.

Clinton ended the ban Tuesday on sales to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Albania, Bulgaria and Romania imposed during the height of East-West tensions.

An administration official said the action "will enhance our military-to-military relations" with the six nations by "making them eligible to purchase defense materials ... as innocuous as uniforms and as lethal as aircraft."
