Balloons Over Europe

The skies across Europe were brightened this month by hot-air balloons during the Aerostatic Raid on Europe 1994, organized by the city of Annonay in the Rh™ne-Alpes region of France. The event was a joint commemoration of the first hot-air balloon flight by the Montgolfier brothers of Annonay in 1783, and man's first

excursion into space: the 1961 rocket launch of Vostok 1 with the Soviet Union's Yury Gagarin on board. Starting in Annonay and finishing in Moscow, the balloons took off from eight different European cities, including Vienna, Minsk and Gagarin City, birthplace of the Soviet hero, in the Smolensk region of western Russia.
