Baku Decrees Death

BAKU, Azerbaijan () -- The military branch of the republic's Supreme Court on Wednesday sentenced a former top police official to death for his role in an attempted coup.

Eldar Aliyev, a top aide to Azerbaijan's former Prime Minister Surat Huseinov, was convicted Tuesday of high treason in the coup attempt in October 1994. Aliyev was chief of the regional police in the city of Gyandzha, in western Azerbaijan, where opponents of President Heidar Aliyev launched a bid to overthrow him. After the coup failed, the president accused Huseinov of masterminding it. Huseynov was fired as prime minister, and has fled the country.

Officials said Eldar Aliev would be shot within a month.
