MOSCOW -- Russia's military leadership does not share the views of a senior commander who recently praised the strongarm methods used by Chilean General Augusto Pinochet, a top Moscow commander said on Thursday.
Colonel General Nikolai Samsonov, speaking to journalists after a news conference, sai00d Lieutenant General Alexander Lebed appeared to be expressing entirely a personal opinion.
"Statements made by General Lebed are always marked by, let's say, personal deliberations," said Samsonov, a deputy defense minister. Asked if Lebed's views reflected top-level military thinking, Samsonov replied: "No.
