Appeal From Saddam

MUSCAT () -- Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has sent a rare message to six Gulf Arab leaders meeting in Oman, calling for reconciliation between the 1991 Gulf War enemies, a senior Arab diplomat said Tuesday.

Iraq has been trying to repair relations with Gulf Arab states which were ruined by its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

The diplomat did not say who delivered the Iraqi leader's message -- addressed to the six Gulf Arab states which Monday started their annual summit in Oman. He said Saddam urged his Gulf Cooperation Council neighbors "to open a new page for the interest of all ... [and] calling for reconciliation."
