All Streets Lead East

KIEV () -- Officials in the Ukrainian city of Kherson are at loggerheads on how to rename 38 city streets that for decades shared the same name, a Ukrainian newspaper reported Tuesday.

City officials have been unable to explain why Vostochnaya, which means "eastern," was such a popular name for streets in the southern Ukrainian city, the Kievskiye Vedomosti newspaper said.

After decades of madly confusing ambulance and taxi drivers, the city council finally took the plunge and established a special commission to rename streets called Vostochnaya.

But local political parties are arguing over street names, the report said, and so far, none has been renamed.
