Algerian Cafe Bombed

ALGIERS, Algeria () -- A bomb blast tore through a crowded cafe in a western Algerian town Wednesday, wounding 23 people in the latest violence in the country torn by civil war.

Three of the injured were seriously wounded when the bomb exploded at about 7:50 a.m. at the cafe in downtown Mostaganem, west of Algiers. The blast heavily damaged the cafe.

Since October, Muslim militants trying to topple the military-backed government have singled out cafes in bustling town centers.

No one immediately claimed responsibility. Such attacks are generally blamed on Islamic radicals trying to discourage frequenting cafes and bars because the Koran, Islam's holy book, forbids the consumption of alcohol.
