A Whale of a Race

HOBART, Australia () -- Tasmania shook off the persistent Hong Kong yacht Exile and a collision with a whale to set itself on a path to victory -- and possibly the race record -- in the 50th Sydney-to-Hobart race Wednesday.

Flying down the east coast of the state that shares its name, Tasmania broke away to a 31-kilometer lead with 220 kilometers of the 168-kilometer journey left. She had a large slice of luck Tuesday, colliding with a whale but coming off unharmed.

"There was a very large crunch to the boat. There was some damage to the whale, but I can only hope there was no damage to the boat," skipper Bob Clifford told television's Channel 10.
