5 Killed in Tajikistan

MOSCOW () -- Five Russian soldiers were shot dead on Tuesday near the Tajik border with Afghanistan, Interfax said.

It quoted informed sources in the Tajik capital Dushanbe as saying the troops were shot from Afghan territory as they drove through Khorog, capital of the semi-autonomous Gorno-Badakhshan region on the border.

Fighters of the Islamic Revival Movement are waging a guerrilla war against Dushanbe and Russian servicemen who patrol the Central Asian state's border with Afghanistan, where many of the rebels fled after losing a civil war in 1992.
