5 Children Die in Fire

MOSCOW () -- Five children left alone by their father died from carbon monoxide poisoning in northern Russia when their log house caught fire while they were sleeping, a news agency reported Wednesday.

The blaze was caused by burning candles that the children's father, a Russian Orthodox priest, had forgotten to extinguish on the table, Itar-Tass reported.

Father Kryazhevsky had left his children alone Tuesday evening in the town of Kotelniche in the Kirov region about 800 kilometers northeast of Moscow.
