40 More Cholera Cases

MOSCOW () -- Russian health officials Wednesday reported 40 new cases of cholera in southern Russia but insisted that the spread of the disease was slowing down.

Yevgeny Belyayev, chairman of the State Committee for Sanitary-Epidemiological Surveillance, said a total of 18 people had died from cholera in Dagestan, 686 had fallen ill, while another 669 had tested positive to the disease.

Most had now recovered, he said.

After reporting well over 200 new cases last week, local health officials had noticed a slowdown, Belyayev said.
