15 Killed as Bus Plunges Off Bridge

Fifteen people were killed and 21 injured when an Ikarus bus plunged off a highway bridge and onto a railway line outside Moscow early Friday.

The accident happened before dawn on the Novakasirsky Highway, 35 kilometers southeast of Moscow. The bus was full of Armenian tourists and was going from Volgograd to Moscow. Also on board were two Armenian drivers and a travel agent.

The bus fell nine meters from the bridge and landed on its roof. Many of the injured were reported by Reuters to be in a grave condition. Only two men and one woman escaped injury, said a traffic police spokesman, Igor Morozov.

He said that investigators had found no evidence that the brakes or any other system on the bus had failed, and concluded that the driver had dozed off at the wheel.

The bus belonged to two Armenian drivers who cooperated with a travel agency in Volgograd.
