Turkmens, Azeris Look Into Pipeline

Bloomberg
Turkmenistan, the second-largest producer of natural-gas in the former Soviet Union, held talks with Turkey and Azerbaijan on establishing a new energy corridor to Europe that would bypass Russia.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov hosted his Turkish and Azeri counterparts, Abdullah Gul and Ilham Aliyev, at the Caspian Sea port of Turkmenbashi Saturday, according to a statement on the Turkmen government web site.

"Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Turkey have huge potential for cooperation, and this moment in time dictates the necessity for us to fully activate it," Berdymukhammedov said.

Europe and the U.S. are pushing for Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan to put aside a territorial dispute in the Caspian and build a sub-sea gas pipeline connecting the two countries. That link could feed into the planned 3,000-kilometeter Nabucco pipeline from Turkey to Austria.
