Medvedev Approves Nizhny Novgorod World Cup Stadium Plans

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree authorizing the construction of a 45,000-seater stadium in Nizhny Novgorod for the FIFA World Cup in 2018.

The decree, published Saturday on the government's website, says that the stadium will be built in the Kanavinsky district, on the confluence of the Oka and Volga Rivers.

Stoitransgaz, the company that will build stadiums for the World Cup in Nizhny Novgorod and Volgograd, said earlier this month that the costs set out by the government for the facilities need to be raised.

The government said that the two stadiums should not cost more than 15 billion ($431 million) each, but Stoitransgaz director Vadim Gurinov said their price tags could exceed 20 billion rubles ($575 million), Vedomosti reported.
