State arms exporter Rosoboronexport on Tuesday denied breaching United Nations sanctions by supplying a dozen MiG-29 jets to war-torn Sudan.
"No MiG-29 fighter planes have been supplied to Sudan, either directly or indirectly," spokesman Vyacheslav Davidenko said, Interfax reported.
The denial came after the Sudan Tribune newspaper said Monday that 12 Russian-made MiG-29 planes had been secretly delivered to Sudan via Belarus.
Citing a source familiar with the matter, the newspaper said the new jets were shipped to Sudan by a Belarussian company two weeks ago.
Last year, Amnesty International accused Russia of supplying arms to Sudan for use in the Darfur region, although the Russian Foreign Ministry denied the claim. A UN Security Council resolution forbids arms sales to Sudan if they will be used in Darfur.
The Belarussian Defense Ministry dismissed as "nonsense" claims that the country had been involved in delivering the jets to Sudan, Interfax reported.
n The Security Council may want to consider suspending any war crimes indictment of Sudan's president by the International Criminal Court, said Vitaly Churkin, Russia's UN ambassador.
The African Union has urged the Security Council to put on hold any ICC decision to accept the court's chief prosecutor's call for an indictment of and arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir over war crimes in Darfur. (MT, Reuters)
