In some parts of the world, it is said that March goes in like a lion and out like a lamb. But in Moscow, the bitter winter was still roaring as March came to a close last week. Thanks to unseasonably cold weather mixed with bright sunshine, unusual ice formations appeared throughout the city, such as these icicle-capped tongues of melting slow, seen from the balcony of an apartment building in northwest Moscow. The long-awaited thaw has its dark side, however: Dozens of Muscovites are killed or injured by falling ice every year. Photograph by Vladimir Filonov.
