When winter comes along, some birds fly south to sunnier lands, while others stay behind at the icy lakes and ponds of Moscow parks, such as the ducks below, photographed at the Moscow zoo in March 2002. In some places, the city government provides tiny houses for the birds so they can stay warm during the frigid Russian winter. Last week, the authorities promised to build 19 new housing units for its urban waterfowl in the Serebryanny Bor nature preserve in western Moscow. Photograph by Vladimir Filonov.
