This image of an Uzbek school in the 1920s went on display last week at Galeyev Gallery. Behind the camera was Max Penson, a Soviet photojournalist who was praised by Sergei Eisenstein and won awards at competitions in Paris before losing his job in the anti-Semitic campaign of the late 1940s and dying in obscurity in 1959. The exhibition of over 200 photographs - many of which were taken in Central Asia, where Penson lived for many years - was assembled by his daughter from her personal archive. "Max Penson" runs to Oct. 31 at Galeyev Gallery, located at 19/6 Bolshoi Kozikhinsky Pereulok.
