A festival of contemporary and vintage cartoon films called Big Cartoon Festival opens Thursday at nine venues, including 35MM and Rolan cinemas and Aktovy Zal arts center. The screenings will feature student films, the latest in Russian and European animation and early Soviet films from 1910 to the 1930s. The scene of a telephone conversation comes from German director Stefan M_ller's "Mr. Schwarz, Mr. Hazen and Mr. Horlocker" while the street scene comes from Pierre-Luc Granjon's film "The White Wolf." Both films date from 2006. The festival runs to Nov. 11. See the festival's web site, www.multfest.ru, for details.
